Maureen, flat on her belly under her Jeep, head just below the front bumper, squirmed backward as the three boys swung their motorcycles around and roared down the driveway. They turned away, however, so she needn't have worried about headlamps finding her.
As the bikes sped off, she scooted herself farther back until she was clear of the tire. Then she scurried out from under the Jeep, dragging her coat beside her. Still sprawled on the road, she waited until the bikes disappeared around a corner.
Seconds later, she was sitting behind the steering wheel. She dug into a pocket of her coat, found the keys, and slid the Jeep key into the ignition.
'Now I've got you,' she muttered.
Grinning, she started the engine. She pulled away from the curb. As she picked up speed, she put on the windshield wipers. But she left the headlights off.
By the time they know I'm coming, she thought, it'll be too late.
