'What sort of a hick are you?' Francine snapped. 'You fall off a haywagon on your way to the rodeo?'
'Gosh, Trevor, how long you been putting up with this gal?'
'Seems like ages,' he said, smiling.
'I reckon as how I'd of given her the boot if I was you.'
'It's crossed my mind. But she's Lisa's mother. Lisa's a good companion.'
'Lisa's what got us into this mess,' Francine said. 'But you wouldn't know that, would you, Daisy May? My wonderful daughter here took up with a jungle bunny and . . .'
'I don't like your mouth one whit, lady.'
'Thank you,' Lisa murmured.
'You tell her,' Francine said. 'I'll bet she'd be very interested in knowing all about it, so she'll know just who to blame when one of these maniacs murders her.'
'I started going out with this guy,' Lisa said. 'And some kids killed him last night. Because I was going with him. And because he was black.'
'I'm mighty sorry,' Sandy said.
'Oh, you haven't even heard the best part yet. Tell her the best part, honey.'
'We don't even know it for sure.'
'The coon's grandpa is some kind of a witch doctor,' Francine explained. 'He's put a hex on the whole town. That's what's happening here. That's why we've got the black rain. It's grandpa's idea of payback.'
