heard Francine squealing behind him but it was OK, he'd missed the bikes, the nearest speeding by just ahead of his bumper as he came off the corner and he waited for the jolt of his tires coming down and something hit them. |

It felt like the sledgehammer of a giant bashing the rear side of the car. He heard screams, a roar of sundered metal and bursting glass. |

The blow slammed his teeth together and threw him against the door, knocking Patterson's hat off his head, then hurled him back against his seat. The world outside the windshield twisted and tipped sideways. Something clipped his cheek. The shotgun? Sandy dropped onto him. Sparks flew at the windshield, tossed up by the side of the car skidding over the pavement. |

He glimpsed the red brake lights of whatever had hit them. Then the spin of his car wrenched the lights out of view. |
