The jolt thrust her forward, stiff arms folding at the elbows. But she was well braced. The impact wasn't as severe as she'd expected. She didn't even hit the steering wheel. |

She plowed right through, bashing the car out of her way, then saw that she was speeding toward the far corner. A mail box there. A tree beyond it. She wrestled the steering wheel to the right. |

She gasped. Her Jeep twirled. She saw the car she'd hit skidding along on its driver's side. Then it was whipped out of sight like something glimpsed from a carousel. |

When she came to a stop, she couldn't believe her luck. Her Jeep was upright near the middle of the intersection, facing in the very same direction she'd been driving before the accident. |

The lights of the motorcycles were specks in the distance. |

Maureen stepped on the gas. Nothing happened. |

Far away, the bikes turned to the right and disappeared. |
