pause and catch his breath. 'Could we walk on over . . . to the Chidi house? And take care of business?'
'Don't see why we couldn't. After we get there and finish up whatever we've gotta do, we can shower off and be OK again.'
'Would we kill everybody there?' Lisa asked.
'I reckon we'd sure want to.'
'But if it's only the grandfather causing the trouble . . .'
'Lisa's right,' Trev said. 'Maybe the whole family's in on it with the old man. but maybe not. We might end up killing some innocent people. And not just at the Chidis. Maybe we won't be able to control ourselves and we'll stop along the way. Once we're changed, we might not even care about getting there. What if we just go on a rampage?'
Sandy shook her head. 'Well, we might.'
'I don't want to go around killing anyone,' Lisa said.
'OK,' Trev said. 'Look. I can go out on my own and not get wet. With any luck, I should be able to make it to the Chidi place on foot in six or seven minutes. We're only about a mile away. If it is the grandfather . . .'
The door behind Sandy flew open. The overhead light came on. Sandy gasped with surprise and flung her arms wide as she flopped backward. Her right arm swung out into the rain. Her left hand clawed at the door frame. Lisa's hand darted down and grabbed a lapel of her coat, but the coat merely pulled open and didn't stop her fall. Trev gripped her ankles.
