'Well, stay with Denise and Tom. You don't have to go to your bedroom. Sleep on the sofa if you get tired.'
'I'm not tired now.'
'How's Tom?'
'Oh, he's real nice. I guess Denny told you what happened, didn't she?'
'A little.'
'Well, we beat up Tom real bad and knocked him out. I bonked him right on the head. But he's fine now.'
'You're a tough little monkey, huh?'
'I am not a monkey, Daddy.'
'No, you're not. I love you, honey.'
'I love you, too. Can I talk to Mommy?'
'Not right now. She's in the bathroom.'
'Oh. OK.'
'You be good, honey. Now, let me talk to Denise again.'
'OK, bye.'
A moment later, Denise said, 'Me again. What I wanted to tell you, there's been some news on the TV. They said this is only happening here in Bixby.'
'Well, that's good to know.'
'Yeah. But the thing is, Tom has this idea about the three of us trying to drive out. You know, go where it isn't raining? He's got an umbrella, and he's already found your raincoat and some galoshes. I don't know. I think we ought to stay here. What about you?'
