'Yes. For godsake, don't leave the house. There's no telling what you might run into.'
'Yeah, that's the way I see it, too.'
'Let me talk to him.'
'Sure. Just a second.'
John heard a quiet whoosh behind him, realized it must be the restroom door opening, and turned to see if Lynn was there. She met his gaze. And suddenly went rigid. Her face lost its color. A frantic, stricken look came to her eyes.
I've been crying, he thought. Shit!
He said fast, 'Everything's fine.'
Lynn shut her eyes. She let out a breath, went a little limp, and leaned her side against the door frame.
'Mr Foxworth?' A stranger's voice.
'Hello. Tom?'
Lynn opened her eyes. She looked confused.
'Yes. Denny said you wanted to speak with me.'
Nodding, he forced himself to smile for Lynn. 'I want you to stay in the house, Tom. Forget about trying to get out of town, OK?'
'Well, you know, if we can get to one of the CHP roadblocks, we'll be safe.'
'Don't try it. Not with my daughter. And not with Denise. If you want to go by yourself, that's up to you. But what I'd really like you to do is stay in the house and take care of the girls.'
'Well . . . I wouldn't go off and leave them, sir.'
'Then you'll stay put?'
John heard nothing for a few moments. Then came a quiet sigh. Tom said, 'Yes, sir. I'll stay. I'll protect
