Now she's weeping, overcome with love for Kara and relief that the girl is OK and probably despair that she might never see her again. A few minutes ago, she'd been mad with lust.
It's having death right outside the door, John thought. Death trying to get at you. Makes life so urgent and sweet.
His hand drifted down to her rump. He squeezed it gently through the slick fabric and she smiled at him and sniffed and told Kara, 'We'll be home pretty soon, honey.'
After she hung up the phone, she turned to John and held him tight. 'I want us to be home with her,' she said.
'I know. So do I.'
'What'll we do?'
'We'd better get back to the others.'
'Can't we leave?'
'You know we can't. Not yet.'
He took Lynn's hand and led her through the cocktail lounge to the foyer. Everyone seemed to be gathered near the closed doors. 'Can I have your attention?' John called out.
People turned to him. The talking faded.
'Where the hell've you been?' Gus snapped.
'I was on the phone.'
'For ten fucking minutes?'
'Shut up,' Lynn told him.
'I found out a couple of things.' John said. 'I talked with someone who saw a newscast, and Bixby's the only place where this is happening. Every place else is fine.'
