'I think we should keep this channel on,' Denise told her. 'They might have another news report.' |

Denise, smiling, patted the girl's knee. And gripped it when she heard a growling rumble of engine noise. She glanced at Tom, then stared at the front door. The roar seemed to be coming from beyond it. As if a motorcycle or a souped-up car was thundering by on the street outside. She waited for the sound to fade away. But it grew louder and louder and ended abruptly. |

A chill squirmed up her back. |

She turned to him. He was gazing at the door. He looked as if someone had just invited him to eat a worm. |

'Is something the matter?' Kara asked. |

Denise ducked forward, snatched the remote control off the table, and shut off the television. 'Somebody stopped in front of the house,' she whispered. |

Kara's lips formed an O, then stretched away, baring her teeth as her eyebrows climbed her forehead. |

'Sounded like motorcycles,' Tom whispered. |
