She heard some quiet voices through the door. Then Buddy said, 'You're bluffing. I know damn well Lisa's there. She got you two for body guards, or what?'
'She's not here!' Tom shouted.
'Bullshit.' He crashed against the door.
'We've got guns!' Tom yelled. 'Now knock it off! Get out of here or I'll start shooting! I swear to God, you hit the door one more time and I'll put some bullets through it!'
Denise heard more faint conversation from outside. Then silence.
She stared at Tom. Grimacing, he shook his head as if he thought the warning about guns was a pretty lame idea, but the best he could do.
He looked surprised when the motorcycles grumbled to life. A grin spread across his face. He whispered, 'I'll be damned.'
'Get away from the door,' Denise said, suddenly fearing that Buddy might try to ram it down with his bike.
'You don't think . . .?'
'I don't know.' She rushed over to the picture window and swept the drapery out of her way. Clamping the hammer between her knees, she cupped her hands against the glass and peered out.
Far to the right, she saw the three boys mounted on their motorcycles. The bikes turned in tight circles near the end of the driveway, their headlights sweeping across the window. Then the bikes roared down to the street, swung right and sped out of sight.
