Denise stepped away from the window. Tom and Kara gazed at her, their eyes wide. 'I don't believe it,' she said. 'They really left.' |
Kara beamed. 'They just didn't want to get shot to smithereens.' |
Tom, with a weary smile, sagged against the door. 'God,' he muttered. 'That was a close one.' |
'I wonder if they'll be back,' Denise said. |
'Yeah. I wouldn't put it past those creeps. Did you see who was with Buddy?' |
'Two other guys. I didn't get a very good look, but I think they were probably Doug and Lou like you thought.' |
'Probably. Those three are always together.' |
'I wonder what sort of plans they had for Lisa.' |
Tom shook his head. 'Did you hear what happened at the dance last night?' |
Denise had agreed to miss the football game and the dance that followed so her parents, being away for the weekend, wouldn't have to worry about her. |
'It was on the news about Max,' she said. |
'Well, that was afterward. But I saw Jim Horner today, and he said Buddy and Doug and Lou showed up drunk and really gave Lisa and Max a bad time. They got themselves booted out.' |
Denise felt herself sinking inside. 'You don't think . . . you don't suppose they're the ones who did that to Max?' |
She saw Tom's face go red. His lip curled up. |
'What happened to Max?' Kara asked. |
