'Somebody murdered him last night,' Denise explained.
'Oooo, yuck.'
She frowned at Tom. 'Kara's mom . . . she told me on the phone that Lisa couldn't come here because her mother was taking her to the police station. It sounded like Lisa wanted to tell the cops something about the murder.'
'Oh, my God,' Tom muttered. 'I guess it'd crossed my mind that those guys might've . . . But . . . I can't believe they'd actually do that to someone. They're real jerks but . . . I mean, to actually . . .'
'Can we change the subject?' Kara asked.
Denise glanced at her, then met Tom's eyes. 'I bet they came here to kill Lisa.'
'They're wet,' he said. 'They'll kill anyone they can.'
'But if they think she's here . . .'
'Maybe they're heading for her house.'
'Or maybe they just rode away to trick us,' Denise said, 'and they'll come back on foot.'

Lou hadn't wanted to leave. Not with Denise there.
But he followed Buddy and Doug away down the street, hurting with disappointment.
