'We'll see.'
'This is a wonderful opportunity. I just don't know why you're so reluctant. I know one thingif they offered to do a big write-up on me in a national magazine, I'd jump at the chance. Can you imagine? They may even want to put you on the cover.'
'Thrills.'
There would be no picture of him on the cover of People Today magazine, or inside it. John planned to make that clear, soon enough, but he figured he might as well postpone the announcement. Let the snoops make their pitch. Let Lynn enjoy herself for a while longer. Have the dinner, and then drop the bomb. She was bound to flip out.

'Do you know what I think might happen?' Lynn asked. 'I think, when the story gets out, everybody will want your paintings. You'll probably even have offers to do exhibits. Wouldn't that be fabulous? Can't you just imagine walking into a gallery in Beverly Hills or San Franciscomaybe even in New York?'
'My stuff sells fine right now,' John said.
'Oh, come on.'
'And if people are going to buy my work, I'd much prefer they buy it because they like it, not because it was painted by the guy who stopped some jerk from plugging Velma.'
'Veronica.'
'Whatever. If I'd known this was gonna happen, I maybe would've looked the other way.'
