writer and photographer who'd come a long way for nothing.
'And I just can't believe you told the man you wouldn't let them do the story,' Lynn said. Then she sighed. 'Of course I believe it. Thank God he called back, or . . .'
'Why do you think that lunatic tried to shoot Veronica?' John asked, speaking softly, knowing how Lynn would freeze up if he raised his voice. 'Because she's famous. Do you think he would've gone after her with a gun if she'd been a nobody? There's a lot to be said for anonymity. John Lennon would probably still be alive today if he'd been a TV repairman.'
'Now you're being just plain ridiculous. Nobody's going to shoot you, for crying out loud, just because People Today does a story about you.'
'You never know. Some nut might read it and get pissed off because I interfered.' He wasn't especially worried about that, but he'd had time during the past week to think of a few matters that really worried him. 'There's something else. They'll want to run photos of us all. So maybe your picture turns on some pervert, and he decides to pay you a visit.'
'Oh, for God's sake.'
'Do you think such things don't happen?'
'I certainly wouldn't know, but . . .'
'I'll tell you one thing, there's no way I'm going to let them put a picture of Kara in that magazine.' Or you either, he thought. Or me. Not a chance. If they try to so much as print our names, I'll hit them with a suit for invasion of privacy.
