'Well, I'm not. It irks me more and more all the time.'
'I'm sorry.'
'And the one time in years you stand up and do something terrific, you don't even want anyone to find out about it.'
'I'm here, aren't I?'
'Under duress.'
Maybe I should let them do the article, he thought as he walked with Lynn through the chilly evening. He checked his wristwatch. Seven o'clock on the nose and the restaurant was just ahead.
It would make up for a lot in Lynn's eyes, if I go along with the damn thing. And they'll probably do some kind of story whether or not I cooperate. No threat of a lawsuit was likely to stop a powerful magazine like that.
But the consequences.
There probably won't be any consequences.
Beneath the restaurant's portico stood a young man wearing a red jacket and a ponytail. Waiting for customers to come along and turn over their cars. The glance he gave John made it clear he didn't appreciate people who parked on the street.
