Charlie yelled, 'Hey!' an instant before her head struck his groin. That let the wind out of him! Ethel hugged his legs, driving him backward as he doubled over her. His rump hit the marble floor of the foyer. |

Ethel clambered up his twitching body. She sat on his chest and grabbed his ears. Using them for handles, she bounced his head off the floor. The first couple of times, it sounded like someone dropping a coconut. Then the sound softened to wet, sloppy smacks as if the back of his head might have turned into a sirloin steak. One that hadn't been broiled yet. All floppy and juicy. |

Willis Yardly signed his credit card slip, tore off the top copy, and fingered the rest of it into the trough under the window. He stuffed his credit card into his wallet, then took out a dollar bill. He used that to buy a Twix candy bar for his son, Jimmy. The boy liked to come along to the filling station and make his own selection, but he had the sniffles so Mandy kept him home this time. |

While Willis waited for change, he folded his copy of the slip. He stuffed that, along with the Twix, into his jacket pocket. His hand came out with a pack of cigarettes, a book of matches. |
