'And the last you saw of Maxwell was when you kissed him goodnight in the school parking lot. Then you left his car to go back to your own car, but didn't see . . .'
'I didn't really look around. They might've been there, and I just didn't see them. You know? They could've had their motorcycles hidden behind something. Some buses were parked over at the side.'
'You've got to give us police protection,' Francine demanded. 'We can't just walk out of here and go on our merry way. Those boys will come after Lisa. I know it.'
'I doubt if they'll have the opportunity,' Trev told her. 'We'll pick them up tonight and bring them in.'
'Oh great,' Lisa muttered. 'Then they'll know I blabbed.'
Trev gave her a smile, then tapped the top page of the legal tablet resting on his leg. 'I've got a whole list of people who saw those guys acting up at the dance. Buddy and his friends won't know you're the one who talked to us. I certainly won't tell them.'
'They're not stupid,' she said.
'They are stupid, or they wouldn't have murdered that young man. If they did it, they're going down. You can bet on it.'
Francine smirked. 'Who are you, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon?'
'No, ma'am.'
'I've got it. Joe Friday.'
'Two of my favorite cops.'
'I'll just bet.'
