few strides. Halting a yard from the edge of the overhang, he stared at the curtain of falling water. It looked dark, all right. But hell, the night itself was dark.
Though he couldn't be certain that the rain was black, it was obviously warm, for he saw a faint, pale mist rising off the walkway ahead of him and the grass that bordered it.
He pulled a folded white handkerchief from his pocket. He shook it open, then wadded it into a ball and tossed it underhand. The cloth unfurled. The instant it passed into the shower, it ceased to be white. Trev watched a sodden black rag drop to the walkway.
'Holy shit,' he muttered.
He rushed back inside the station.

Kara didn't jump, but her face pulled a contortion that made Denise laugh: eyes wide, forehead rumpled, nose wrinkled, lips twisted sideways. It was the kind of expression, Denise thought, that this particular girl might put on her face if she just happened to notice a boogeyman leering at her from the darkness of a closeta weird mixture of fright, disbelief and amusement.
