'I'm not going in there alone. It's storming out. What if I'm by myself and we lose the juice?' |

'While you're losing the juice.' |

Kara laughed. 'If you were on The Gong Show, I'd gong you for that.' |

'You're a cruel little thing.' |

She's not all that little, Denise thought. Her slender build probably made her look taller than she really was, but the top of the girl's head seemed to be almost level with Denise's shoulders. |

It was odd, having to accompany her to the toilet. |

She's only nine, Denise reminded herself. In spite of her height and rather grown-up behavior, she's still just a kid. A kid who doesn't like storms. A kid who's afraid of the dark. |

At the end of the hall, Kara said, 'You don't have to come in if you don't want.' |

Kara turned on the light, entered the bathroom, and stepped out of sight behind the open door. 'Don't go away.' |

She heard a rustle of clothes, then splashing sounds. |

'Mom said it'd be all right if you wanted to invite your boyfriend over. Would you like to do that? I think it might be neat. What's his name?' |
