Denise heard his phone clatter against something. 'He's checking with his parents,' she told Kara.
'You didn't have to say it was my idea.'
'It was your idea.'
'Well, stilllll.' In the pot behind her, popcorn began to burst with soft explosive sounds and a general clinking of kernels hurled against the walls and lid.
When Tom returned to the phone, he said, 'It's OK with them.'
'Really?'
'Yeah. They're not overjoyed about me going out on a night like this, but I told them we wouldn't be driving around in it. I'm supposed to go straight to your house, and come straight home afterward.'
'Nobody's there.'
'Hey, if they knew you were babysitting, there's no way they'd let me come. As far as they know, you're at home with your folks and we're just going to stay there and watch the tube.'
'Liar liar, pants on fire.'
That seemed to amuse Kara no end.
'Necessity is the mother of deception,' Tom said. 'So, what time do you want me?'
'As soon as you can make it. The popcorn's gonna be ready in about five more minutes.'
'I'll be as quick as I can.'
'Get here while it's hot.'
'I'll try. See you.'
'See you,' she said, and hung up. To Kara, she said, 'He's on his way.'
