'What's going on?' Francine sounded more angry than frightened, as if she hadn't come to the police station in hopes of being shot at, and blamed Trev.
'I don't know,' he said. He stepped around the end of the counter. 'The rain's black out there.'
'That's ridiculous.'
'Look for yourself if you want.'
Francine shook her head. She and Lisa had come out of the interrogation room and were standing among the desks, holding hands. Lisa's gaze was fixed on Lucy's body. She looked as if she might get sick.
'You two keep an eye on the door. If someone comes in, speak up fast.' Trev moved in between Lucy's overturned chair and the switchboard.
'What are you doing?'
'I'm gonna see what some of these calls are about.' The headset lay on the floor where it had fallen when it flew off Lucy. Trev pulled it up by the cord and put it on. The earphones had a built-in microphone that curved around in front of his mouth.
He pressed a button on the switchboard. One of the lights stopped blinking and he heard a line open.
'Hello? Hello?' A woman's voice, high-pitched.
'Bixby Police Department.'
'You've gotta send a car! Quick! God, where've you been? There's a madman trying to break in. I shot at him. He tried to come in a window, but I shot at him. I
