don't think I hit him, but he's still out there. I'm all alone and he's trying to get me!'
'Could you describe him?'
'He's black, that's all I know.'
'A Negro?'
'No. I don't think so. He's just got black stuff on him, I don't know. What does it matter? I need help!'
'Give me your address, please.'
'4329 Larson.'
'Got it. Hang on, I'll contact a patrol car.'
'Hurry! Hurry!'
Trev picked up the radio mike and fingered the speak button. 'All units, report.' He released the button. Waited.
'Oh my God!' the woman squealed. 'Oh my Jesus! He's . . .'
Trev cringed as gunblasts hit his ears.

'We've got troubles here, too. Are you sure the intruder's dead?'
'Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Oh, yes.'
'OK. Now, we'll have a car there as soon as possible. In the meantime, just take it easy and try to stay calm.'
'Ho ho. Calm, yes. Jesus.'
'And don't go outside or let anyone into your place. There's something strange going on.'
'You're telling me? Oh, I think I've already noticed. Strange?'
