'Somebody fuckin' call the cops!'
'Probably just some bruised ribs,' the doctor said, his voice soft and calm through the mayhem. 'Maybe a couple of hairline fractures. Nothing to be especially concerned about, I should think, but we'd best get you to the ER for some x-rays.'
John looked again as the doctor covered her with his blazer.
'Just lie still for the time being.'
The waitress who had tried to pull the attacker off Cassy came over and squatted down. 'Are you OK, hon?'
'I'll live.'
'Christ, what got into Bill? What got on him?'
'I don't know. But thanks for coming to the rescue, Joyce.'
'No problem, hon.'
'Did he hurt you?'
'Naa. I'm fine. You take care of yourself,' she said, then straightened up and turned to the crowd surrounding the man.
Dr Goodman turned his head toward John. 'And you are?'
