If only he were invisible . . .
John forced himself to look away from her.
People were gathered around her assailant. Through a narrow gap, however, John saw that he was facedown. Some men were using their belts to bind his arms behind his back and lash his feet together.
'God, why did he do that to me?'
John shook his head.
'He just ran in and attacked me for no good reason. We've always been friends. It's like he went crazy or something. God! I don't get it. And what's that all over him?'
'I don't know.'
She looked at John. 'Can I keep your jacket for a while?'
'Sure. Go ahead.'
'I don't know why that man had to cut my costume. I'll have to get new laces and . . .' She sighed. 'I suppose everyone here got an eyeful.' Apparently, however, she didn't care much. Or figured there was no more reason for modesty. She took the blazer away from her chest. John managed not to moan as a rush of heat surged through him. He knew he should look away, but he couldn't. Cassy swept the jacket behind her, pushed her arms through the sleeves, then over-lapped the front and held it shut. She smiled at him. 'Hey, this is nice and warm.'
'Well, keep it as long as you like.'
One side of her lip curled up, showing her teeth. 'I wonder what I'm supposed to do now.'
'Well, the ambulance . . .'
